Abominations in Scripture: Acts That Oppose God’s Holiness and Justice

In the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, the term "abominations" refers to various acts, behaviors, and items that are not just frowned upon but are unequivocally detested by God. These are actions that incite divine wrath and create a chasm between humanity and the divine, fundamentally opposing God’s nature and His intentions for humanity. When we think of abominations, we delve into a range of behaviors that are specifically highlighted throughout scripture—those acts that embody pride, deception, violence, and moral corruption, to name a few. Among the key examples, we find pride, which is often the root of many sins, lying, murder, wicked schemes, the sowing of discord among people, idolatry, certain sexual misconduct (as outlined in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13), and dishonest practices in business dealings (as emphasized in Deuteronomy 25:16).

Let us take a closer look at some of the scriptures that define these abominable acts, starting with the passage from Proverbs 6:16-19, which delineates the seven abominations that God abhors. These are as follows:

1. A Proud Look (Haughty Eyes): This is an attitude of arrogance that elevates oneself above others, disrupting the harmony intended by God.
2. A Lying Tongue: Fabricating falsehoods not only erodes trust but also reflects a heart turned away from truth and integrity.
3. Hands that Shed Innocent Blood: This starkly signifies the severity of murder and violence, particularly against those who are defenseless and vulnerable.
4. A Heart that Deviseth Wicked Imaginations (Wicked Schemes): This speaks to the deliberate intent to devise malicious plans that hurt others, demonstrating a twisted moral compass.
5. Feet that be Swift in Running to Mischief: This refers to those who eagerly engage in wrongdoing, exemplifying a lifestyle rooted in rebellion against God’s commandments.
6. A False Witness that Speaketh Lies: Bearing false witness harms reputations and can lead to devastating consequences, undermining justice and truth.
7. He that Soweth Discord Among Brethren: Creating division and strife between individuals or communities is particularly grievous and is directly opposed to God’s desire for unity and love.

Beyond these specific actions, there are also broader categories of abominations that touch upon idolatry and religious compromise. For instance, the worship of carved images or any attempt to bring these objects into one’s home (as warned in Deuteronomy 7:25-26) is seen as a direct affront to God’s majesty. Furthermore, such serious sins as sacrificing children, condemned in Deuteronomy 12:31, reflect the extreme moral depravity that can arise when people turn their backs on the divine. The prophetic references to the "abomination of desolation" found in both Daniel 11:31 and Matthew 24:15 serve as stark reminders of the consequences that arise when God’s holy places are defiled. Offering sacrifices without the proper heart and intent undermines the sanctity of worship, as seen in Proverbs 15:8 and 28:9, which reiterate the idea that God desires sincerity over ritual.
From a societal and behavioral standpoint, several other abominations merit attention. Sexual immorality is explicitly noted, including the reference to men lying with men (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13), emphasizing the biblical stance on sexual ethics. Additionally, the practice of cross-dressing, where a woman wears men’s clothing or vice versa (Deuteronomy 22:5), is listed among acts that are considered abominable. Dishonesty in commerce, specifically the use of divers weights and measures, as highlighted in Deuteronomy 25:16, exemplifies moral corruption in business dealings. Moreover, the notion of bringing "the hire of a whore" or "the price of a dog" to the temple as an offering (Deuteronomy 23:18) starkly illustrates the rejection of true reverence for God and His sacred spaces.

Lastly, we should acknowledge the broader theme of general frowardness expressed in Proverbs 3:32: "The froward is abomination to the LORD." This encompasses all forms of defiance against God’s righteous pathways. These abominable acts are deemed such because they stand in direct opposition to God's holiness, justice, and overarching love for humanity. They are warnings about the potential pitfalls of turning away from God’s commandments and the moral decay that can ensue when humanity approaches life devoid of divine guidance. Through these examples and admonitions, we are urged to seek a life that aligns with God’s desires, embracing His principles of love, integrity, and truth.

Stephen's Death

Understanding Matthew 16:25 In the King James Version of the Bible, Matthew 16:25 beautifully encapsulates a powerful spiritual paradox: "For whoever seeks to save their life will lose it; but whoever loses their life for my sake will find it." It's a thought-provoking reminder that sometimes, in the quest for self-preservation and comfort, we might actually miss out on the deeper, more profound life that comes from surrendering ourselves for a greater purpose. The Heartwrenching Death of Stephen Now, if we shift gears a bit and dive into Acts 7:58-60, we find ourselves facing one of the most intense moments in the early Christian church – the execution of Stephen. Stephen wasn’t just your average believer; he was one of the very first deacons appointed to help with the needs of the early church. People recognized him for his incredible faith, wisdom, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in his life. Unfortunately, this great calling came at a high price. God's Hol...

cubierta de cabeza

1 Corintios 11:4-13 RV 1909 4.
