Abominations in the KJV: A Guide to Divine Displeasure

In the revered King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, the term "abominations" encompasses a wide range of actions, behaviors, and attitudes that evoke an intense sense of disdain and detestation in the eyes of God. These abominable acts are not merely minor infractions; they represent egregious violations of divine commandments and are often linked to serious issues such as idolatry, sexual immorality, societal injustice, and variouis forms of ritual impurity. 

The term "abomination" serves as a translation for several Hebrew words, the most notable of which include 'to'ebhah', 'shiqquts', and 'sheqets'. Each of these words conveys the sense of actions that not only breach God's statutes but also lead to the defilement of both individuals and their communities. 

When exploring the KJV Bible, one can find numerous examples that illustrate what constitutes an abomination. These can be broadly classified into categories, including moral and ethical abominations, idolatrous practices accompanied by ritual impurity, and sexually immoral and socially unjust behaviors.

Moral and Ethical Abominations

The first category, moral and ethical abominations, speaks to the deeply rooted principles that guide human behavior and social interactions. 

✅ Pride and Arrogance: The Bible strongly condemns prideful attitudes, proclaiming that a "proud look" and those who are "arrogant in heart" are seen as abominable before the Lord. Such hubris leads to a distortion of values, distancing individuals from humility and divine truth.

✅ Lying and Falsehood: In a world where honesty is pivotal, "lying lips" and a "false witness that speaketh lies" are deemed utterly detestable to God. The emphasis on truth underscores the importance of integrity and trust in all relationships.

✅ Injustice: Actions that perpetuate injustice, such as justifying the wicked while condemning the righteous, or engaging in dishonest business practices—illustrated by the phrase "divers weights and divers measures" (referring to unequal scales)—are unequivocally labeled as abominations.

✅ Wicked Schemes and Discord: A "heart that deviseth wicked imaginations" and those who "sow discord among brethren," stirring up conflict, earn a place on the list of seven things the Lord hates, highlighting the destructive nature of divisiveness within communities.

✅ Ignoring God's Law: The Bible warns that the prayer of an individual who "turneth away his ear from hearing the law" is considered an abomination, indicating the serious repercussions of rejecting divine instruction.

Idolatrous Practices and Ritual Impurity

The second category of abominations pertains to idolatry and ritual impurity, which fundamentally undermine the sanctity of worship.

✅ Idolatry: The act of worshiping false gods, crafting "graven images," and engaging in associated pagan rituals are consistently denounced as abominations. This serves as a stern reminder of the importance of authenticity in worship and fidelity to God’s commandments.

✅ Child Sacrifice: Particularly abhorrent is the historical practice of child sacrifice to deities like Molech, which was an unspeakable abomination in the eyes of the Lord, reflecting the depths of moral corruption.

✅ Sorcery and Necromancy: Engaging in witchcraft or attempting to consult the dead through necromancy is explicitly described as abominable in the Scriptures. Such practices are seen as a profound betrayal of the reliance on God's sovereignty and wisdom.

✅ Unclean Foods: The dietary restrictions outlined in Levitical law explicitly label the consumption of certain animals, such as pigs, shellfish, and various birds of prey, as an abomination. This reinforces the significance of purity and holiness in both body and spirit.

✅ Improper Sacrifices: Offering a blemished animal or making a sacrifice with impure motives is condemned as well. It illuminates the necessity of bringing one's best before God in sacrificial acts of worship.

 Sexual and Social Abominations

Lastly, the KJV offers stark admonitions against sexual and social abominations that threaten the fabric of society.

✅ Same-Sex Sexual Relations: The Scriptures explicitly declare that a man lying "with mankind, as with womankind" is an abomination, emphasizing the traditional views on sexual morality.

✅ Incest and Adultery: Various forms of incest, as well as infidelity exemplified by lying with a neighbor's wife, are definitively labeled as abominable actions that lead to societal decay and defile the land.

✅ Cross-Dressing: The Bible stipulates, "a woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment." This highlights the importance of maintaining traditional gender distinctions in the context of biblical morality.

In the New Testament, Jesus further emphasizes this theme by stating that "that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God." This poignant declaration challenges humanity’s self-justification, pride, and misplaced values, urging a reflection on what truly matters in the realm of divine morality. In essence, the concept of abominations in the KJV is a call to align one's life and values with the holiness and righteousness that God desires, encouraging believers to cultivate a life that honors His commandments and reflects His character.
